Want to sail a Tall Ship?

If it’s your dream, we can make it come true.

Meet new people become part of a team?

You will learn new skills and make new friends.

We help you to push the limits.

Countless possibilities! You’re in full control.

In 2015, we’re going sailing!

Have you got what it takes? Will you come?

Set sail for the adventure of a lifetime….

From 2-5 July 2015, tall ships from across the globe will anchor in Belfast for the start of The Lidl Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival, one of the biggest events Belfast will ever host.

The vessels will dock in Belfast from 2 July before departing on 5 July, for Alesund, Norway. Belfast Tall Ships are offering 80 lucky people from Northern Ireland the opportunity to become trainee crew on this 10 day voyage. Once on dry land you will celebrate your achievements with a few days in Alesund, before returning to Belfast.

Due to the high level of interest for places as part of Belfast Crew 2015 , selection centres will now run from 15-18 December and not 24-28 November.  We will be in touch with applicants by end of November to advise on the outcome of applications.

Belfast Crew 2015

Check out our video which gives you a flavour of what to expect and hear from a few of our 2009 trainees – the last time the race sailed into Belfast!

If you have a spirit of adventure, are resident in Northern Ireland and are aged 16 years and over then this is the opportunity for you.

Through this amazing trip, you will have the chance to meet new friends, explore new places and develop your skills through a Tall Ships Adventure Voyage. We are offering opportunities to potential crew of all ages with an increased number of places reserved for 16-25 year olds. This really is a once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed!

Imagine the sense of achievement, excitement and pride when you arrive in Norway having completed a 10 day voyage covering 690 miles across the North Sea. In Alesund, you will have the opportunity to mix with the hundreds of other crew and participate in the city’s social activities for the fleet.

Anyone can sail, no experience is necessary as some training will be provided.

Let’s answer some questions you may have

How can I get selected?

Thank you for interest in being part of the Tall Ships Crew for Belfast 2015.  Applications have now closed and we wish all those who applied the best of luck.  If you would like further information on self funded places aboard vessels please email: tallships@belfastcity.gov.uk

Will I have to take time off work / studies?

The trip will take place in July 2015 and you will be required to be available for two weeks in total. In preparation for the voyage, you will be required to attend a selection date (one day in late November) and training (one day in January and one in the early Spring).

Will I receive training?

While many of the ships like to bring trainees with little or no experience, we would still like to ensure you are adequately prepared for the challenge. We will be providing you with training in advance of the trip. This will be both shore based and practical experience on the water and includes sea survival training. These sessions will take place in January and early Spring.

What will be my role on board?

It will be all hands on deck as you will get involved in a whole range of jobs on board. You will play a major role in getting your ship to Alesund.

Do I need special clothing?

Some ships will provide oilskins and wet weather gear, while others may not. We will ensure you have what you need before you set sail on your voyage.

Do I need to bring food or money?

The ship will supply all meals, although if you have specific dietary requirements, you need to advise of this in advance.

As for money, we would advise you to bring money (Euros) as some of the ships may have tuck shops. You will also spend two days in Alesund, Norway where the currency is kroner. We will also offer you advice on valuables; every ship will be different.

Will I be able to use my mobile phone or contact home?

It is unlikely you will be able to use your phone but this will be dependent on the ships capabilities. All ships have communication equipment should there be a need to call home.

How much will this cost?

Belfast Tall Ships will support up to 80 trainees. The entire trip from start to finish will be arranged by Belfast Tall Ships, and we will also provide the training outlined above. Belfast Tall Ships will cover approximately 75% of the costs but we do expect you to raise a portion of the costs – a minimum of £300.

For decades, trainees participating in the Tall Ships Races have fundraised to support their trip. We want you to tell us on your expression of interest form how you plan to fundraise.

What happens if I am not selected or live outside Northern Ireland and
want to fund the trip myself?

If you are not one of the 80 selected for support by Belfast Tall Ships, but wish to self fund your trip or source other funding, we will help you in your efforts to secure a berth, and also provide some advice on travel arrangements being made by the Belfast group.

What if I want to contact to someone before I apply?
